Poor Colm Corbec

This contains a spoiler for the Gaunt's Ghost series by Dan Abnett. I mean, it's not really a spoiler since no one lives forever in the Ghost series (or so I have been told), but all the same don't read on if you are currently within the first or second omnibus or if you plan on reading them.
Anyway, I reached the end of the second omnibus today, The Saint, and I cried for a good few minutes when I saw that Corbec was killed. That man . . . I loved him. He didn't deserve to die like he did, by Cuu. Corbec deserved a hero's death. One by enemy fire. Don't get me wrong, I am so fething happy Cuu is dead. Ever since he killed Bragg I have wanted him dead. But, Cuu died during an assassination attempt on Sabbat's life after he had killed Corbec. In a way, Cuu died because Corbec did. This part does not please me. In fact, it brings more tears to my eyes.
I love Abnett. He is a great writer, but a bit of dick. I understand why he kills the characters: because we like them. Let the characters the reader hates live and the ones the reader loves die because the fact that the reader feels anything at all for these fictitious people that is something amazing and it means the writer has done something correct.
Just, at the end of day, I wish it wasn't Corbec. I wish he could have stayed around a bit longer. He was my favorite Tanith. On the plus side, Milo is gone and now I won't have to worry about his life being lost. Unless, he comes back --- I hope he doesn't return to the Ghosts.

I'll miss you, Corbec. The Emperor protects. Sometimes.

  1. It was a heart wrenching ending. I am so pissed, I think it will be a few days before I can continue the series.

    1. I agree. I had a hard time reading the next books. I ended up taking a break for a few weeks!
