I am just about finished describing myself as an anime fan. It's not because I don't like anime anymore, I still love it, but every time I tell someone I like anime I get this look. This look of, "Oh, so you're a weeaboo." Hell, someone even said it to me. That's like when I say that I like comics and everyone assumes I love Batman, Spiderman, and Superman. NO. These are not true facts, so stop it. I am no a weeaboo nor do I love Bats, Spidey, and Supes. I can tolerate Bruce and Peter, I just plain hate Clark. Anyway, back to anime: I'm not going to say I don't own anime products, I don't own a bento box (ordering one now, actually), or that I don't love weird-ass shit like man-love and moe, but I will say that I am not creepy as shit and I have taste.

So, how am I defining weeaboo? Basically I view one of these people are someone who: watches everything without criticism, wears only anime styled, based, etc. clothes, acts like a character in ways of "cutesy" movements that are characteristic of moe or gag manga, and so on. To me weeaboos are extreme cases of fandom that lack definition, and I admit I was there at one point-- of course, it was before weeaboo was thing; I swear I'm not a hipster.
In time, most weeaboos grow out of their creepiness and turn into real fans that know what they want, how they want it, and so on. A few of my friends and I made it to this point and we all now have varying degrees on what we really enjoy and purchase. So, it goes without saying how offensive it is to me when someone calls me a weeaboo. People are calling me, in the end, uncultured and creepy. I'm fucking hot, so me being creepy is not a fact.

I love cosplay because who doesn't love costumes? Fascists. This doesn't make me a weeaboo. I could go on and list all the reasons, but it won't convince people who truly believe that anyone who watches anime is a weeaboo. Those people are just plain stupid, but for those of you who are a little confused on how to use this word: use it carefully because no matter if someone is a true weeaboo or a grown-up fan weeaboo is quite offensive. Like calling Captain America Superman.

This totally hits home with the old saying of pa's: When you assume, you make an ass out of me and you.
ReplyDeleteThis is why I have such a hard time being able to tell people that I myself love anime, because I'm afraid that that is going to be their first thought, and therefore they already have made their decision as to how they're going to see me.
I'm sorry that you're having that issue. And it is really sad that people can't express their intrests without being looked down upon or being thought of differently.
It's hard choosing between being the person that cares what people think of them, and the person who doesn't give a flying fuck.
I agree. I think I reach that the delicate point of caring and not. In the end I am very sensitive to how people view me, but the logical part of me wants to brush everything off.
